ARE THOSE TOENAILS INGROWN?

DO YOU DIG-OUT YOUR INGROWN? IN TODAY’S BLOG, WE DISCUSS ALL ABOUT INGROWN TOENAILS!

What is an ingrown toenail?

An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail or the corners curve, digging into the soft tissue often causing pain, irritation, redness, and swelling. Typically, toenails grow straight out. However, there are occasions where one or both corners curve in. Ingrown toenails can appear at any toe, but the most common location is the big toe. Improper nail trimming, pressure from shoes, repetitive stress to the foot from regular activities, and genetics can all contribute to ingrown toenails.

Symptoms:

Some important symptoms that present with ingrown toenails are:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Drainage
  • Pain

Treatment:

At Align Foot & Ankle Clinic, Dr. Ho-Ellsworth can examine your ingrown toenail(s) and provide the treatment options. If you have chronic ingrown toenails and you are self-treating or getting pedicures to “dig-out” the ingrowns, Dr. Ho-Ellsworth can offer a safer, more permanent solution. During your evaluation, Dr. Ho- Ellsworth determines which option best suits your needs.

A traditional  approach to  remove the  corners of the nail and applying medication can stop the regrowth of the ingrown margins.

A newer, painless and more innovative method that Dr. Ho-Ellsworth offers, called the Onyfix Nail Correction System can correct the curved nail and restore it to a more natural nail shape, allowing immediate return to activities. Backed by research and years of proven success, it is ideal for diabetic patients and patients who fear having a procedure or injection.
