Don’t Fry Day: Why Foot Sun Protection Matters More Than You Think

Don’t Fry Day: Why Foot Sun Protection Matters More Than You Think

The Friday before Memorial Day is recognized as Don’t Fry Day—a national reminder to protect your skin from harmful UV rays as summer begins. While most people remember to apply sunscreen to their face, arms, and shoulders, the feet are often forgotten—even though they are just as vulnerable to sun damage.

At Align Foot & Ankle, we’ve seen firsthand how sun exposure can create complications for our patients, especially those with diabetes, neuropathy, or a history of chronic wounds. Protecting your feet from the sun isn’t just about avoiding a painful sunburn—it’s a crucial part of long-term skin and foot health.

Why Foot Sun Safety Matters

  • The skin on the tops of your feet is thin and sensitive, making it more prone to burns.
  • Sandals and flip-flops offer no protection, leaving feet exposed for long periods.
  • Patients with neuropathy may not feel the warning signs of a developing burn.
  • Scar tissue or previously injured skin is especially vulnerable to UV damage.

Even one bad sunburn can cause discomfort, skin breakdown, or long-term discoloration. In higher-risk individuals, it can even contribute to more serious complications like delayed wound healing or skin cancer.

The Risks of Sun Exposure on the Feet

  • Painful sunburns that make walking difficult
  • Blistering or skin breakdown in patients with thin or at-risk skin
  • Increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer often found on the feet and ankles
  • Delayed wound healing, especially in patients with diabetes or vascular disease
  • Hyperpigmentation or tissue fragility, especially in previously treated or injured skin

How to Protect Your Feet This Summer

  1. Apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to the tops of your feet and between your toes.
  2. Reapply every two hours, especially if sweating or swimming.
  3. Avoid walking barefoot on hot pavement, sand, or concrete.
  4. Choose shoes or sandals that offer UV protection or coverage when possible.
  5. Cover healing wounds, scars, or grafted skin with light bandaging or protective clothing.
  6. If you have neuropathy or a history of wounds, perform daily skin checks or have a caregiver assist you.

Who’s at Higher Risk?

Some patients are more vulnerable to sun damage, including:

  • Individuals with diabetes or peripheral neuropathy
  • Patients with autoimmune conditions like lupus
  • Those with a history of foot ulcers, grafts, or surgical scars
  • Anyone with vascular disease or poor circulation
  • Older adults with thinner skin and slower healing capacity
