Broken bones, or fractures, are common foot and ankle injuries for both children and adults. Two of the most common types of foot and ankle fractures include:
Stress fractures
Stress fractures are small cracks that don’t go all the way through the bone.
This type of fracture typically happens because of overuse and repetitive use (such as running-intensive sports).
Traumatic fractures
Traumatic fractures occur when a break bisects the bone or breaks it into three or more pieces. Most traumatic fractures involve straight-across breaks, but in rare cases, a bone can break in a vertical or angled pattern.
Traumatic fractures usually happen as a result of direct blows to the foot or ankle, falls, or sports injuries.
Both stress and traumatic fractures can cause symptoms that may prevent you from walking and functioning normally.
Fracture symptoms can vary with the injury, but common issues include:
When you have a fracture, your symptoms usually increase during weight-bearing activities and lessen when you get off your feet.
If you experience any of the following symptoms, it’s important to reach out to Align Foot & Ankle as soon as possible.
Dr. Ho-Ellsworth assesses your fracture during a physical exam and takes X-ray images to help create your fracture care plan.
Some fractures, particularly stress fractures and simple traumatic fractures, may not require surgery. Dr. Ho-Ellsworth may apply a brace, splint, or cast to preserve bone position so it heals in the correct position. You’ll have to forgo strenuous activity as you heal, but in most cases, you can use crutches or a scooter to get around.
If your fracture requires surgery, Dr. Ho-Ellsworth uses the most minimally-invasive techniques possible. She has extensive training and experience in forefoot and reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery, so you’re in the best hands for excellent surgical results.
You’ll typically have a cast, splint, or brace after surgery and must follow strict activity guidelines to heal. With the right recovery plan, you can experience full healing and return to normal activities without restrictions.
