WHY DIABETIC FEET NEED EXTRA ATTENTION AND WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP

DIABETES IS A CHRONIC DISEASE THAT AFFECTS MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WORLDWIDE. IN TODAY’S BLOG, WE WILL FOCUS ON DIABETES IN REGARDS TO THE SYMPTOMS PEOPLE EXPERIENCE TO THEIR FEET AND ESSENTIAL TIPS ON HOW TO CARE FOR ONE’S FEET.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or can’t effectively use the insulin it does produce. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates blood sugar levels, so when there’s not enough of it, blood sugar levels rise to dangerous levels. High blood sugar can damage the nerves and blood vessels in the feet over time. With a loss of feeling to the feet from nerve damage, minor cuts and injuries can go unnoticed and infection can develop leading to diabetic foot complications and even amputation.

Symptoms of diabetes involving your feet and ankles can vary depending on the type and severity of the condition. However, common symptoms include:

  • Swelling of the foot or ankle
  • Numbness or tingling in the feet or toes
  • Increased pain or cramping in the feet and  legs
  • Skin color and temperature changes to toes and feet
  • Nail changes leading to thickened or ingrown nails
  • Skin changes including dry, thin skin or cracked skin at the bottom of feet or heels

Foot Care Tips

As a diabetic, it is important to check your feet daily to avoid any complications. Here are a few foot care tips to do daily:

  • Check your feet and toes every day for any sores, cuts, or changes to toenails.
  • Do NOT go barefoot! Always have on protective foot wear to reduce the risk of cuts and injuries.
  • Make sure your new shoes are properly measured and fitted to the shape of your foot.
  • Consistent exercise  can help regulate  blood sugar.

If you have diabetes, visiting a podiatrist annually should be part of your regular healthcare routine to manage any issues that may arise. From routine foot exams to management of wounds, and if necessary surgical correction of deformities to prevent wound development, a podiatrist can provide comprehensive care tailored specifically for diabetic patients.
