Back-to-School Shoes: How to Pick the Right Pair for Growing Feet
A new school year means kids are back to spending hours on their feet—walking hallways, running at recess, and playing after-school sports. The right shoes aren’t just about style; they’re about protecting growing feet, supporting healthy development, and preventing injuries that can slow kids down.
1. What Makes a Supportive Shoe
Not all sneakers are created equal. A good school shoe should:
- Bend only at the ball of the foot—not through the arch
- Resist twisting from side to side
- Have a firm heel counter to keep the heel stable
- Provide cushioning without collapsing under weight
- Include a removable insole (helpful if orthotics are ever needed)
2. Choose the Right Shoe for the Right Activity
The same pair of shoes shouldn’t cover gym class, the playground, and a soccer game.
- Everyday/school shoes: Supportive sneakers with durable soles
- Sports-specific shoes: Cleats, basketball shoes, or running shoes built for the sport
- Casual shoes: Fashion sneakers, flats, or slip-ons should be worn occasionally, not daily
3. Alternate Shoes
Rotating between two pairs of shoes gives each pair a chance to fully dry between wears, reduces odor, and extends their life. Alternating also slightly changes the way the foot works, which can help reduce repetitive strain.
4. Keep Up with Growth
Kids’ feet can grow half a size or more in just a few months.
- Look for about a thumb’s width of space at the front of the shoe
- Check fit every couple of months during growth spurts
- Avoid hand-me-down shoes—they’ve already molded to another child’s foot shape
When to Get a Foot Evaluation
Most kids will do just fine with a supportive, well-fitted shoe. But if your child:
- Complains of foot or leg pain
- Walks or runs with feet that roll in or out
- Wears out shoes unevenly
- Has frequent injuries during sports
…it may be time for a professional foot evaluation.
At Align Foot & Ankle, Dr. Ho-Ellsworth uses gait plate scans or 3D imaging to assess foot structure and walking patterns. For kids who need extra support, she may recommend:
- Custom orthotics – Best for older kids who won’t outgrow them quickly
- The QuadraStep system – A cost-effective, growth-friendly option that’s tailored to common foot types
Her goal is to keep kids active, comfortable, and ready for all the running, jumping, and learning the school year brings.
