Psoriasis and Your Feet: What You Need to Know

August is Psoriasis Action Month, and while most people associate psoriasis with red, scaly patches on the elbows or scalp, this chronic condition can also affect your feet and toenails—often in ways that are misdiagnosed or overlooked.

At Align Foot & Ankle, we regularly treat patients who’ve been living with foot symptoms they thought were due to fungus, eczema, or dry skin. In some cases, the real culprit is psoriasis.

What Is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that causes rapid skin cell turnover, leading to inflammation and a buildup of thickened, scaly skin. On the feet, this may show up as:

  • Plantar psoriasis: scaly, red, or cracked skin on the soles, sometimes mistaken for athlete’s foot.
  • Nail psoriasis: thickened, ridged, yellow, or pitted toenails that can resemble fungal infections.
  • Psoriatic arthritis: inflammation in the small joints of the toes or ankles, which can cause pain and stiffness.

These signs may appear on their own or in combination, making accurate diagnosis essential.

When It’s Not Just Dry Skin or Fungus

Psoriasis can mimic many other common foot conditions, which often leads to delayed or incorrect treatment. If you’ve tried antifungal creams or moisturizers without success, psoriasis could be the reason why.

At Align Foot & Ankle, Dr. Ho-Ellsworth performs a thorough clinical evaluation to determine the true cause of your symptoms. This includes visual inspection, patient history, and, if needed, nail or skin sampling to rule out other conditions.

How We Treat Psoriasis in the Feet and Toenails

While there is no cure for psoriasis, treatment can significantly improve comfort, function, and appearance. Depending on your symptoms, Dr. Ho-Ellsworth may recommend:

  • Remy Class IV Laser Therapy: helps reduce inflammation and improve nail appearance in cases of nail psoriasis or thickened plaques on the soles.
  • KeryFlex Nail Restoration: provides a healthy, natural-looking nail while the affected toenail grows out underneath.
  • EB-L1 Medical Food Supplement: supports nail growth and structure in patients with brittle, discolored, or irregular toenails.
  • Tolcylen Antifungal Solutions: helpful for overlapping cases of nail psoriasis and secondary fungal infections.
  • Custom Orthotics: used to relieve joint pressure and support alignment, especially for patients with psoriatic arthritis affecting the feet or ankles.

If needed, we also coordinate with dermatologists and primary care providers to ensure systemic medications or biologics are part of your care plan when appropriate.

When to Seek Help

If you’ve noticed persistent toenail changes, cracked heels, or hard, scaling skin that doesn’t respond to typical treatments, don’t wait. Psoriasis is more manageable when caught early—and with the right diagnosis and tools, you can take the next step toward relief.
